SWSO Frequency Studio
by Streetwise Software Online · SWSO
A stereo tone generator for the Mac. Frequency Studio plays tone sessions: two steady tones, one in each ear, a few hertz apart, so the difference between them is heard as a slow beat. You type the tone frequency, the beat frequency and the length of each segment, and the app builds the stereo audio.
What it does
- Three ways to make the beat. Binaural: the left ear hears one tone and the right ear a slightly higher one — 195 Hz left and 205 Hz right gives a 10 Hz beat. This one needs headphones, because on speakers the two tones mix in the air. Isochronic: one tone that turns smoothly on and off at the beat rate, the same sound to both ears, so speakers are fine. Monaural: both tones are mixed together before they reach your ears, so the beat is in the sound itself.
- Sessions built from segments. A session is a list of segments played one after another. Each segment has a length and glides the tone and the beat from a start value to an end value — for example 6 minutes gliding the beat from 10 Hz down to 6 Hz, then 24 minutes holding at 6 Hz. Use the same number twice for a steady tone or a steady beat.
- The numbers you type. Tone from 40 to 1500 Hz, beat from 0.5 to 40 Hz, segments from 3 seconds to 240 minutes, up to 50 segments and up to 8 hours in one session. Fade-in and fade-out lengths are yours to set.
- Noise background. None, white, pink (soft, like rain) or brown (a deep rumble), each with its own level.
- Live readout. Large numbers show the tone in each ear and the beat between them. A chart shows how the beat changes across the whole session, with a white line marking where playback is. Band names — Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gamma — are shown as a label for the beat rate only.
- Playback controls. Play and Pause on the Space bar, Stop fades out early, and the session fades in, runs and fades out on its own. Frequency Studio keeps the Mac awake while a session plays; the screen can still turn off.
- Headphone channel test. Click Left Ear or Right Ear to confirm your headphones are the right way round before a binaural session.
- Built-in sessions, and your own. The built-in sessions cannot be changed; click Duplicate to make an editable copy, or New Session to start from scratch.
Exporting
- Stereo WAV. Export Audio saves the whole session as a stereo WAV file you can play on a phone or in any music app, at 44.1 or 48 kHz and 16 or 24-bit. The file sounds exactly like playback in the app. Long sessions make big files — an hour at 48 kHz / 24-bit is about 1 GB — and the size is shown before you save.
- Session files. Export Session saves the settings of one session as a small .swsofreq file for backup or to hand to someone else running Frequency Studio. Import Sessions adds .swsofreq files to My Sessions. Frequency Studio reads its own session format only.
- Where your sessions live. Your own sessions are saved on this Mac, under your Library folder, and the previous copy is kept alongside as a backup.

Back to all softwareVolume and safety
Keep the volume low — the tones should be soft and comfortable. Frequency Studio caps its own output, but your Mac's volume matters too. Do not listen while driving, operating machinery or doing anything that needs your full attention, and stop if you feel uncomfortable, dizzy or get a headache. If you have epilepsy, a seizure disorder, a heart condition or a pacemaker, or are pregnant, ask your doctor before using rhythmic sound sessions.
